Submarine Sonar Manufacturer Eliminates Process Duplicity and Lowers Costs with Deltek GCS Premier® Sales Order Entry
The Challenge
When Chesapeake Sciences Corporation, designer and manufacturer of sophisticated listening devices for submarines, decided it was time to automate their sales order entry processes, they didn't have to look far. As a long-time Deltek GCS Premier customer, CSC relies on Deltek's accounting software solutions to manage its corporate finances and project accounting.
“Our ERM system and the Deltek system didn't talk to each other. We were basically doing double entry for every purchase order and every inventory transfer,” said A. Scott Preston, Chief Financial Officer for Chesapeake Sciences Corporation. “Every receipt had to be keyed into our old ERM system, and then people in accounting would have to re-key it all into Deltek, which is our system of record.”
When Deltek released its Sales Order Entry and Bill of Materials modules for GCS Premier, CSC jumped on the opportunity to consolidate solutions and improve its sales order processes.
The Solution
CSC tested GCS Premier's new Sales Order Entry and Bill of Materials modules as a means to consolidate its materials management information and processes. “We wanted to move all of this into one system,” said Preston.
During the testing stage, CSC ran its current system parallel to the enhanced GCS Premier solution, comparing the two side-by-side. CSC found that GCS Premier, combined with the two new modules, not only removed the duplicity within CSC's disparate systems, but it also made the organization more efficient and cost effective.
“With everything in one system, it is much easier for everyone to get all the information they need. Our project managers can log in and see everything” said Preston.
The Benefits
“We get better information,” Preston said. “The information we can get out of our system is FAR compliant and DCAA compliant…and the reporting is far more robust as well.”
In the past, CSC hired programmers to write the custom report necessary for their audits, but with its new capabilities, GCS Premier allows CSC—whose contracts are almost all with the U.S. Navy—to generate requisition and bill directly, electronically into the WAWF.
“In general, we are very confident this solution will work for us long-term,” said Preston.
